Our goal is to inspire the creative imagination of each person.  Workshops and classes are age and skill-level appropriate.

When registering your child for summer classes, select appropriate grade level child will enter in Fall 2008.  Four-year-olds must reach therir fourth birthday by June 1, 2008 to register.
Waterworks Spring Classes 2008
ADULT CLASSES

 “Wine”ing About Art (ages 21+) Space Available
Enjoy a glass of wine and light refreshments while learning about art!  This casual lecture and group discussion briefly follows the establishment and development of European and American modernism during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. 
Dates: Thursdays, May 8, 15, 22
Time: 7 – 8 PM

CHILDREN'S CLASSES
 Fantastic Flowerpots! (ages 4 – 7 with adult) Limited Space Available
In this adult/child workshop, children decorate a flowerpot just in time for Mother’s Day!  Encourage your child to flex his or her creative muscles to make a fantastic and unique work of art.

 `Awesome Environments" (Ages 8-11) Limited Space Available
Children learn about nature and celebrate the upcoming Earth Day holiday by creating 3D landscape collages using natural materials.  Children are encouraged to make nature landscapes of beaches and forests or their very own wild and crazy fantasy world!  This class is a fun way for kids to learn that they can make an original work of art using objects found on the ground at the park or at home in the yard.

 A “Magnet”ficent Father’s Day! (ages 4 – 7 with adult) Limited Space Available
In this adult/child workshop, children create a magnet portrait or self-portrait to give as a Father’s Day gift.  Children are welcome to make two magnets if they wish: one to give away and one to keep.

Morning Classes 10:30-12:45

Learning from the Masters / 1st-2nd Grades
Picasso. Miró
. Dali. Modern art includes many artists, styles, and techniques, including Cubism, Expressionism, Surrealism, and Impressionism.  Students will explore of these modern movements while creating masterpieces of their own.

Photography-Photo Transfer / 6th-8th Grades

Bring your digital camera and learn photography techniques.  Students will create a photo transfer to use in a project of their choice. If time allows, we will walk to a local historic site for an outdoor camera “shoot”.

Bird or Fish? / Ages 4-5
Students’ imaginations will be challenged to create stylized animal sculptures from clay.  Ever heard of Flying Fish or Swimming Birds?

Georgia O’Keeffe: Bones & Flowers / 3rd

5th Grades

Learn about the life and art of Georgia O’Keeffe.  Students will create their own large-scale flowers with pencil and paint and will paint a desert landscape in the O’Keeffe style.

June 23-27

June Messy Art / Ages 4-5
The children will explore four artistic mediums: clay, paint, paper maché, and paper craft.  Get creative and messy!

Zoofari! / 1st-2nd Grades

Each day, students will discuss animals and their habitats while creating fun clay projects in response.  Make a zoo full of animals while learning basic hand-building techniques, such as pinching, coiling, and slab.  Students will make and glaze an animal mug and will create fun new creatures to add to the animal kingdom!

Broadway Bound / 3rd-5th Grades

Do you like to perform?  Ever wanted to be on stage?  Students will learn how to create characters, design sets, make costumes and props, and learn about character makeup.  Everything comes together with a short performance for families on the last day of class.

Afternoon Classes 2-4:15


Art from Stories / 1st-2nd Grades
Students will enjoy a story each day and create their own illustrations using different art media, such as painting, drawing , and collage.  At the end of the week, students will present a brief program of their favorite book, including songs and dance.

Science and Art Collide / 3rd-5th Grades

Create art using both the left and right sides of the brain by  exploring how science contributes to art.  Multiple approaches and media will be explored as students learn how the two thinking modes collide.

Introduction to the Wheel / 6th-8th Grades

Have you ever tried using a potter’s wheel?  Now is the time!  This class is designed for students who have never used the wheel and for those still developing basic throwing skills.  Students will learn how to center the clay on the wheel and make basic forms such as bowls, cups, and mugs.

 Starry Night / 1st-2nd Grades
Students will study the life and art of Vincent Van Gogh.  They will try their hand at creating their own masterpieces similar to Van Gogh’s famous Sunflowers and Starry Night
using various media.

Glass Reflections, Kaleidoscopes, & More / 3rd-5th Grades

Make your own working brass kaleidoscope!  Students will learn how to make designs, cut mirror, and create pattern with color in their kaleidoscopes.

It’s Okay to be Messy / Ages 4-5

Come get creative and messy with paint and paper!  Students will explore different art mediums.

A Bug’s Life / 1st-2nd Grades

Students will examine pinch, coil, and slab building techniques using clay. Create a variety of projects centered on nature and the life of a bug! Bug rattles, bug mugs, garden signs, and branch tree pots are just a few of the projects students will make.

Explore Paint! / 3rd-5th Grades

Learn about paint and try your hand at different painting techniques! A basic painting class with room for lots of imagination!Instructor: Jessica Buckwalter

Afternoon Classes  2-4:15

Purr...fect Pet Portraits / 1st-2nd Grades

Bring a favorite photograph of your pet (dog, cat, fish, hamster, etc.) to create both expressive and colorful paintings and sculptures of your family’s best friends.

Around the World Clay / 3rd-5th Grades
Each day students will visit different countries creating works of art inspired by the country's culture and history.  They will learn various hand-building and throwing techniques while they craft projects, such as King Arthur’s court goblets, Appalachian Face Jugs, Egyptian pyramid boxes, double-spouted Native American pots, South American Myan jewelry, and Chinese teacups or Peruvian stirrup cups.

Portrait and Figure Drawing / 6th-8th Grades
This class will explore the human face and figure.  Students will learn how to correctly draw portraits, using a variety of media.

July 21-25
Morning Classes:  10:30-12:45

Fantasy Art / Ages 4-5

Each day will feature a special fantasy...pirates, fairies, magical places, spaceships...imaginations will soar! The week will end with a brief performance and display of the students’ fantastic creations, along with songs and dance.

Animals, Animals / 1st-2nd Grades
Students will discuss animals and their different traits and how to create a 3D image.  They will choose a favorite animal and create and paint a paper maché
sculpture.  At the end of the week, they will use recycled items to create yet another animal!

Wind Chimes / 6th-8th Grades
Students in this class will use various hand tools to create their own unique wind chime, using metal, wire, stones, and other materials.

Afternoon Classes  2-4:15

Leaping Literature! / 1st-2nd Grades
Bring classic children’s literature to life through this clay adventure.  Each day the teacher will read and discuss an age-appropriate classic storybook, such as Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who and Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are
.  The students will then respond to the story with specific clay projects while learning basic hand-building techniques, such as pinching, coiling, and slab building.

Eco-Friendly Art / 3rd-5th Grades
Put on your “green shoes” and create art from throw-away items.  Learn the three “R’s”-- Recycle. Reuse. Reduce.  A musical performance about saving the environment will be presented at the end of the week.  The students’ costumes and instruments will be made from recycled materials.

Altered Art:  Empowering Girls-Image and Identity (7th-12th Grades)
A special class for middle and high school girls in conjunction with the summer Gallery Exhibitions that pays homage to generations of female artists!  Using existing books, boxes, and "found" objects, students will transform and create this personal altered art using a variety of mulimedia including:  painting, sewing, layering, stamping, calligraphy, and photo transferring.  Projects will include a collaborative journal, jewelry, and wooden shadow boxes.  Students are encouraged (but not required) to bring photographs and miscellaneous objects of personal interest to be used in their works of art.

July 28-August 1

Art Explorers / 1st-2nd Grades

The rain forest, bat caves, ocean floors, harsh deserts, and mountains will provide inspiration as we examine and explore a variety of media.  Students will be up to their eyeballs in paint, clay, and mixed media as they examine both the world of art and nature.

Monet and Me / 3rd-5th Grades
Students will study the paintings of French artist Claude Monet and learn about Impressionism.  They will create their own version of an Impressionistic painting!

Beginners Wheel  / 3rd-5th Grades
An overall introduction to clay for beginners and experienced beginners who wish to work on the potter’s wheel.  Students will learn and build on methods used for centering clay, throwing cylinders and bowls.  Emphasis on skill building, form, decorating and glazing pots will be part of this class.

Clay Play! / Ages 4-5
Have fun in the clay studio making pinch pots, animals, and food sculptures.  Young students will love this clay class while they learn about basic hand-building and glazing techniques.

Welcome to the Jungle / 3rd-5th Grades
Students will be introduced to the art of artist Henri Rousseau as they begin their study of printmaking, collage, and painting.  They will use paint, paper, markers, and brayers to print found objects, animal-inspired masks, and a large-scale mural.

Discovering Ceramics / 6th-8th Grade
Students will experiment with coil and slab building techniques as they explore the sculptural possibilities of working with clay.  A variety of projects will allow the exploration of 3-D form.

Needs-based scholarships are available for adults and children through the Katharine W. Osborne Scholarship Fund.  For information and/or application, please contact WVAC:  Monday-Friday, 9am - 5pm, 704.636.1882.
When registering a child for summer class, select the appropriate age or grade level he/she will enter in Fall 2008.  Four-year-olds must reach their fourth birthday by June 1, 2008.


Class fees are due at registration.  You may register in person or by phone with VISA or MasterCard during regular business hours.  Registration is not complete until payment is received.

Annual Membership must be valid at time of registration to receive member rate and multiply class discounts.  You may chose to become a member at registration and receive applicable discounts.

No refunds will be given for cancellation less tha 15 calendar days before the start date of any class.

No refunds for withdrawals after class sessions have begun.

WVAC reserves the right to cancel any class with insufficient enrollement and will refund 100% of your class fee.

To insure a quality experience for all involved, WVAC reserves the right to refuse/remove a student due to behavioral concerns. If a student is asked to leave, class fees will be forfeited with no refund.

The Katharine W. Osborne Scholarship Fund

The Waterworks Educational Scholarship Fund, sponsored by Katharine W. Osborne, provides financial aid for Waterworks’ art classes for adults and children. Needs-based applications are available through the Waterworks Visual Arts Center's Education office and are confidential.   You may email: education@waterworks.org or call 704-636-1882. 

Registration Information

Waterworks members are offered discounts for most classes.  To take advantage of the member discount, you must be a member at the time of class registration. General Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration closes two  weeks before the first day of class.
