2007 Dare to Imagine Portfolio Winner

The Waterworks Visual Arts Center is pleased to announce the 2007 Dare to Imagine Award recipient as Mr. Logan Childress, South Rowan High School, Class 2007.  The Dare to Imagine Award is made possible through a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Norvell, valued patrons of the Waterworks and the larger cultural community.  The award is offered to the graduating senior who most exemplifies the creative potential of the human spirit, heart, and hand.

Logan is the son of Jimmy and Linda Childress, China Grove, North Carolina and his participating art instructor was Ms. Jackie Elliot.  In addition to receiving a $1,000 scholarship Logan's portfolio of work, which is professionally framed compliments of Fine Frame Galleries, Salisbury, North Carolina, is on exhibit June 16 through August 25, 2007.  Logan plans to attend the Savannah College of Art & Design, beginning in the Fall 2007.  For additional information about the Dare to Imagine Award and application information for 2008, please scroll down.

2008 Dare to Imagine Portfolio Award

The Waterworks Visual Arts Center is pleased to announce the 2008 Dare to Imagine Award review process.  The Dare to Imagine Award, now in its sixth year, is made possible through a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Norvell, valued patrons of the Waterworks and the larger cultural community.


Award Description

The award will be presented at the Spring 2008 Senior Awards Assembly of the recipient’s school, to the graduating high school senior who meets the requirements of the mission statement:

 In recognition of the importance of art in the life of our community, the
Dare to Imagine Award in the amount of $1,000 is presented by the Waterworks
Visual Arts Center to the Rowan County graduating senior whose artwork
most exemplifies the creative potential of the human spirit, heart, and hand.

 Exhibition and Reception

The award-winning student’s portfolio of work will be featured in a one-person exhibition at the Waterworks Visual Arts Center  May 30 - September 6, 2008.  The opening reception for the Dare to Imagine exhibition will be held on, Friday, May 30 from 6-8 pm and will coincide with three professional exhibitions. The opening reception is free and open to the general public.  We strongly encourage the attendance of the student’s family, teacher(s) and school administrators at the reception to acknowledge the accomplishment of the student and enjoy the admiring comments that Waterworks patrons enthusiastically share. 


Submission and Review of Work

Teachers interested in submitting student portfolios for review should deliver the portfolios to the Waterworks by 4pm, Friday, April 25. Please be sure each portfolio is labeled with the following:
 

  • The art teacher’s name, email, and preferred contact telephone number.
  • The student’s name (sealed in an envelope), parents’ names, mailing addresses, and telephone numbers
  • The names of the principal and the assistant principal for curriculum, email addresses, school name and full mailing address.
 The above contact information will be used to inform all parties of the student’s portfolio submission for consideration of this prestigious award  The portfolios will undergo a blind review by the WVAC Executive Director to dismiss the concern of bias.  Announcement of the winner will be made by telephone to the student, then the art teacher, followed by a broadcast email to all high school art teachers and high school principals by May 5, 2008.  Teachers should pick up portfolios by Saturday, May 10, 2008, before 4pm. The award recipient’s teacher will receive new Guidelines.
 
The portfolio of labeled original work , should include:
  • 6-10 samples of 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional work, or a mix of each
  • A typed list of work with the Name of Student, School, and Art Teacher at the top of the page. And, for each piece submitted, list the title, size, medium, and year created.  The works need not be mounted or matted at this point. However, if the student is deemed the award winner, it is expected that Waterworks will professionally mount, mat, and frame the pieces. Any previously framed works will be removed from the frame and returned to the student with matting intact.  
  • The works are to be collected by the student the week of September 8-13, between the hours of 10am-4pm.
 Please note:  The WVAC Executive Director will select the work from the winning student’s portfolio that will hang in the 2008 Dare To Imagine exhibition.
