Artist Talk with Carmella Jarvi Thursday, June 24, 2010 6:30 to 8 pm
Carmella Jarvi is a full-time artist in Charlotte, NC, best known for her paintings of women in pools and her passion for the business of art. From April 12-August 23, Ms. Jarvi will be an Affiliate Artist at the McColl Center for Visual Art as well as having a summer solo exhibition of new paintings at Waterworks Visual Arts Center.
The artist's life-long passion for water and the human form is seen in her paintings of women in pools. Since 1992, shes painted figures in water, mostly women in swimming pools. Her work is often autobiographical: a woman moving through water. Carmellas paintings are not a report on water, but her view of the experience one has with water. In many of these paintings she works from photos, shooting pictures from outside of the pool and from underneath the water (with underwater camera, weight belt & goggles). She also works with live models and paints water en plein air.
In 2006, she quit her full time job to be a professional artist. Since, she's attended Vermont Studio Center twice. She received a NC Arts Council Residency Grant for her June 2008 VSC residency.
