Our outreach programs fro 2009-2010 :
WVAC along with the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra and Rowan County Parks & Recreation, provided an opportunity for (24 K-5) students to participate in a weeklong art, dance, and music camp.
30 area middleschool students participated a weeklong long Summer Middle School Artist Residency. taught by professional artist/instructors. The works created during this residency will be displayed during our fall exhibition. WVAC worked with the RSS system to provide ARTstop programs that included a tour of Waterworks’ facility and a hands-on project for all RSS 5th grade students. ARTstop projects are based on one of the following themes,:12-object design, contrast design, foreshortening, Picasso style self-portraits, pop art, or surrealism. ARTstops satisfy eight of the goals of the NC Standard Course of Study for visual arts and are part of the curriculum for all RSS 5th grade classes.
WVAC partnered with Rowan County Parks & Recreation and Nazareth Children’s Home and provided art classes for disabled/behaviorally challenged adults/youth during the fall and spring months.
WVAC was proud to be able to continue its outreach efforts; we hosted our 4th exhibition and reception for “The Faces of Abundant Living” which is an awareness effort for the Abundant Living Adult Daycare Program servicing disabled and elderly adults.
For the 4th year, we hosted an exhibition and reception for participants of the Rowan County’s Association for Retarded Citizens summer activity program.
WVAC, the Rowan Public Library and coordinated and hosted the 5th annual Summer Reading Challenge. A panel comprised of a bestselling author, a journalist, a newspaper editor and a history professor discussed the selected books dealing with the theme of courage.
Over 500 families participating in art-making activities attended our 7th annual Family Fun Day.
New to Family Fun Day this year was a children’s concert lead by award-winning singer/songwriter Timmy Abell and the St. Luke’s Episcopal Amadeus Youth Choir.
Over 20 students received scholarships to attend classes at Waterworks.
