MILO VAN AUKEN by Adam Osborne, graphite
Better known as Van, he was born in Maryland and he and his wife have three sons. He is living a good life and enjoys reading his Bible everyday.Part of his career time was spent both in the Marines and the Army. He also worked as a lineman, and a corrections officer. Van enjoys the study of history and especially loves National Geographic and while watching or reading likes the background of Big Band music 

JULIA JOHNSON

Julia was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, and later made her home in North Carolina. Julia married and spent her career working as a home health care aide. She loves holiday celebrations, anything sweet to eat, music, and reading. She enjoys walking and is an outdoor girl. Her religion is an important part of her life.

uth was born, raised and has always lived in Faith, North Carolina. She was married to Dwight for 48 years and they had 4 children, a son, and 3 daughters, and a grandson whom they raised. She worked as an inspector of automobile carpet at Collins Aikman. Among her many interest through the years have been: sewing, crafts, music, and fishing. She presently enjoys time with her grandchildren, cooking, Bingo, and her Bible study. Her faith is strong, and she is a long time member of Faith Baptist Church.

BILLIE ANN BOST

Billie Ann was born and raised in Rowan County and graduated from Boyden High School. She has two sons and a daughter. After her marriage her career took her into the family business, Bost Construction, where she worked for many years. Billie Ann is known for her beautiful singing voice and her faith and church are very important to her. She is a member of the Eastern Star. 

JEANNETTE JACOBS by Barbara Garwood, pastel
Jeannette was born in Rowan County and has lived most of her life here. She married Charles Jacobs in 1952 and is the mother of four sons, Bill, Douglas, Paul, and David. Her favorite times are those spent with her close-knit family. She also enjoys music, especially Gospel, reading, and Bingo. Her church, Stallings Baptist, and her church family have always been important to her. She is a lovely lady and is enjoyed by others at Abundant Living. 

BENNY DREW

Benny is a retired Hoechst Celanese man but he was first and foremost a stonemason. He has a gift with stone and his talents with rock building can be seen in Dan Nicholas Park, the Bell Tower in Rockwell, the Chime Bell at the Nazareth Children‟s Home and the wall in Rock Park, as well as the stone work on Morrow Mountain. Benny now enjoys music and dancing. He and his wife have three children.

MARGARET WRIGHT by Patt Legg, pastel
Margaret was born and raised in Greensboro during the Great Depression. She is a warm and good-natured lady and loves helping others. Margaret worked at Cannon Mills and made all of her own and children‟s clothes. She has a son and a daughter. Her church, Central Baptist, has always been an important part of her life. In addition to her many interests, she enjoyed selling Tupperware and Stanley products. She is known for her sweet smile and her caring nature.

DOROTHY GOSTIC

Dorothy was born in Texas, married, and has five children. Her husband served his country in Korea and she worked for J.C. Penney. Dorothy enjoys nature, animals and especially walks in the park. She also likes to listen to Big Band and classical music. After moving from the Northeast, Dorothy now resides with her daughter and son-in-law in Davie County. She has a warm and caring personality and enjoys her time at Abundant Living. 

ELDORA HAYS by Frank Saunders, watercolor
Eldora was born and raised in New York where many of her friends still live. She has one son, Charles, and now resides in Salisbury. She worked as a substitute teacher and with ARC/Rowan where her love of children was exemplified by teaching young people the value of learning right from wrong. Her faith is central to her life and she declares it is her strength and comfort. 

JANICE WILLEMSEN

Janice is a gentle, kind, and loving woman who enjoys the company of others and her Salisbury Academy book buddies. She has worked as a secretary and during her working years also learned to assemble circuit boards. Janice always has a smile and it is well- known how much she loves children. She resides in Rowan County with her daughter.

Virgil is married to Betty Earnhardt and is wonderful company for the folks at Abundant Living. He was in the Army, and later worked as a bookkeeper and also as an oil deliveryman. In addition to those careers, he owned a framing shop. His special interests are music, puzzles, trips to the mountains, and his church.

Born and raised in a large family in China Grove; Ramelle married Henry, and they had two children, a son, Michael, and a daughter, Janice, with whom she lives. She worked for a while at Cannon Mills and later worked at Staton Mill and the Bostian Elementary Cafeteria. Along the course she did lots of gardening, freezing, and canning for her family. Ramelle‟s interests included sewing, reading, singing in the choir and being active in all facets of church life at Ebenezer Lutheran. 

VICTORIA AURORA

Vicki was born in New York. Her mother died when she was only a few months old. Her aunt and foster parents raised her. Now a widow her husband, Ted, passed away in 1989. Vicki worked as a waitress. She has three children, a daughter in New York, a son, Teddy who lives in Salisbury, and Cindy with whom she lives. Her interests include crocheting, needlepoint, and reading. She also enjoys music from the Big Band Era.

Dick was born in Mississippi and lived for a while in Virginia. He and his wife have three sons. Dick graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in journalism and worked as a journalist with several different newspapers. He also worked with the U.S. Information Agency in Washington, D.C. In addition, Dick spent thirty years in Pastoral Counseling to the benefit of many people. His faith is strong and very important to his life. He has a profound love of music, especially classical. He also enjoyed golf and bridge, and supported our youth by coaching both baseball and football.

KENNETH CARROLL by Sean Meyers
Kenneth was born in Kings Mountain and has resided in Rowan County for many years with his wife, Annie Boone. He has three children, Kevin, Keith, and Jody. Kenneth served his country in the U.S. Army. He is a retired school teacher, was a musician, and worked for the N.C. Corrections-GED program. A member of the AME Zion Church, his hobbies and interests include, story telling, being a motivational speaker, playing upright bass, jazz, and reading.

Wendy was born in London, England and came to the United States at age 36. She is married and has three children. Prior to marriage she was in the Royal Air Force in England. During her career years she served as the president of a corporation, and was also president of the Electoral Council while living in Florida. In addition, she has worked as a Head Start teacher. Her hobbies include computer games and listening to old time music. She loves to talk and to share stories with her companions at Abundant Living.

Arthur is described by folks at the Abundant Living as a very warm and friendly man who always requests piano music when he arrives. He was born in Georgia and served in World War II. After settling in North Carolina he worked as a carpenter for Cannon Mills. He used his skills to build many houses, garages, and other buildings. He loves being outside and enjoys gardening. He has seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He enjoys looking at old pictures, watching Andy Griffith reruns, and says that prayer and his faith are very important to his life.

 
JOY VERITY by Sean Meyers, photograph Joy is a lovely lady who was born in Michigan. She grew up on a fruit farm where apples, pears, grapes, and strawberries were grown. She describes it as, "yummy!" During the career years she worked as a secretary and raised two children, Nancy and Peggy. She has eight grandchildren. Joy‟s interests and hobbies include singing, writing poems, reading, and play-ing the harmonica. She plays her harmonica each day for her friends at Abun-dant Living. She has spent lots of time in church and with Women’s Aglow. Her faith is very important to her.

ROBERT WOODBURY

Robert is from East Spencer and is married. He and his wife have three chil-dren. Robert‟s career was spent as an insurance agent. Robert also served his country in the U.S. Army.He has a passion for watching sports including football, soccer, and baseball. He also has a love of music, especially piano. Other interests included painting, making belts, and doing needlework.
 

JIM BAILEY by Mark Brincefield, watercolor
Words that are used to describe Jim include, "awesome" and "sweet". We can be certain his wife would agree. A fine man indeed, he often entertains by telling tall tales and interesting stories. He worked as a sale representative and was often rewarded for being the top salesman. He also worked for the railroad and enjoyed traveling. In addition, he served his country in the U.S. Army. He enjoys playing golf, fishing, and serving as a Shriner. 

BOB EVANS by Delores Medlin, graphite After 20 years of service in the U.S. Army, that included service in Korea and Germany Bob retired from the military. While stationed in Germany he met and married his wife and all three of their sons where born in the same hospital in Germany. While in the service, Bob was awarded two Purple Hearts and one Bronze Star. A true hero, he was shot three times. He is true gentleman of military bearing, manner, and polish. After his discharge he and his wife returned to the U.S., raised their boys and now live in Rowan County.

ora was born in Concord, N.C. and lived in Kannapolis with her husband of 58 years, until his death. They have five children, 3 girls and 2 boys. Dora has a degree from Mitchell College in English. During her working years she was co-owner of Bob‟s Finance Company. She has a fondness for crossword puzzles, reading, and music of all kinds and she loves to dance.

Margaret has a lovely, sweet face framed by a ring of soft gray curls. She also has a lovely voice and enjoys singing. If you ever saw the well-dressed windows and the fashionable clothes in the window of Purcell’s of Salisbury you may thank Margaret for her years of service to the store and her talent for beautiful displays. 

MILDRED LAWS by Colleen Walton, watercolor
This is a lady who loves country music, and has a story or two to tell about her days as a mill worker. She enjoys the music at Abundant Living with her friends and always adds a happy sparkle to the group. Mildred has one daughter.

MARVIN JOHNSON by Grace Nicholson, acrylic on canvas
Marvin was born and raised in Concord, North Carolina on a farm. He has a sister and three brothers. Marvin has been married to Juanita for 64 years; they have three children and eleven grandchildren. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked as a superintendent in construction and became a talented cabinet maker. Marvins religious faith is very important to him, and he is a member of Rockwell United Methodist Church. He is an interesting man, well versed in many subjects, and lists among his interests rock collecting, music, photography, gardening and woodworking. 

ROBERT "BOB" NEAL by Sherry Culler, sculpture
Bob was born in Winston Salem and grew up in Madison, North Carolina. He went to Appalachian State. He and his wife, Bonnie, have been married for 32 years and they have a son and a daughter. His little dog, Winkie, a long haired dachshund is a special delight and comfort to him. He served his county in the U.S. Air Force, and during his career years Bob worked in advertising for Bellsouth and also taught school. Listing the things that give him pleasure: his religion, children, pets, music, Western movies, and being outdoors.
