REMEMBERING “MS. DEBBIE”
A heartbreaking lose for Waterworks…
With great sadness, we share the news of the passing of Deborah “Debbie” Koontz Hoffman (August 1, 1953 – December 16, 2025), a beloved educator, inspiring mentor, and cherished member of the Waterworks community. Ms. Debbie, as she was affectionately known, left this world peacefully in late 2025, surrounded by love and the deep appreciation of all whose lives she touched.
For more than two decades, Debbie poured her boundless energy, compassion, and creativity into teaching young artists at Waterworks Visual Arts Center in Salisbury, North Carolina. Her joyful spirit and nurturing approach made her classes a highlight for generations of children — many of whom returned year after year to explore art, imagination, and self-expression under her guidance.
Born and raised in Rowan County, Debbie graduated from Rowan-Cabarrus Community College with an Associate of Arts degree and spent nearly twenty years as an Exceptional Children teacher in the Rowan-Salisbury School System. Beyond her work in the classroom, she shared her love of movement and performance through dance instruction for over 45 years. Her unique blend of artistic insight, patience, and genuine care made her a memorable teacher both in schools and at Waterworks.
Ms. Debbie’s legacy at Waterworks includes countless Summer ARTventures classes where her imagination sparked creativity in the youngest artists — from fantasy art and playful mixed media to whimsical projects inspired by famous painters and stories that invited kids to laugh and learn in equal measure. Parents and students alike came to know her not just as a teacher, but as a dear friend who believed in every child’s creative voice.
Her contributions were recognized by Waterworks through awards and board service, and her presence helped shape the center’s educational mission of “ART for ALL.” The impact of her work will continue to be felt in studios, galleries, and hearts throughout our community.
As we mourn Debbie’s passing, we also celebrate a life lived with passion, generosity, and joy. We invite Waterworks members, friends, families, and former students to remember her spirit — be it through a favorite piece of art, a remembered laugh in her classroom, or simply by letting creativity live on in your own life.
Rest in peace, Ms. Debbie. Your legacy will continue to inspire.
